Based in NYC with their manufacturing group in France, they sell high-quality perfumes starting at $29 each, making them the must-have scent brand that’s a smart choice for your skin, health, and the environment.
Dossier was founded in 2018, opened their ecommerce store in April 2019, and have sold hundreds of thousands of bottles of perfume.
We sat down with Dossier’s CEO, Sergio Tache, and Head of Logistics & Product Development, Ines Guien, to learn how this brand went from 0 to 100 (or 100,000) very quickly.
Finding a fulfillment partner that just works

I set out to start Dossier after realizing that perfume margins are extremely high with a huge markup.
Unlike cheap options that use fake or low-quality ingredients and evaporate after 30 minutes, we are focused on producing high-quality products, sourced from Grasse, France.
I’ve worked on several other ecommerce ventures, from beauty and cosmetics to hair extension brands, and gained a lot of insights into the industry. When we were first getting started with Dossier, we were doing everything by hand manually.
I shipped everything myself and made a lot of trips to the post office. It was intense and pretty tough.
You quickly reach that breaking point, where you cannot do it any longer, and it’s not worth the compromised quality of life.
We did some market research, and I knew some other brands that used ShipBob. I think the first thing that really came through with ShipBob was that the pricing structure was very easy to understand. The pricing was competitive, but most importantly, the services were excellent. Everything just works.
We also really appreciated that there were no long-term contracts required with ShipBob to start, even though we’re now in a long-term partnership with them. A lot of 3PL companies want you to sign a 1-5 year contract upfront when you don’t even know if they will be around that long.

Gaining new insights into order status, tracking inventory, and other key data points

Overseeing logistics, product development, and day-to-day operations has me working very closely with ShipBob.
ShipBob’s dashboard is super intuitive and easy to navigate.
I love that you can view orders based on when they are processing, completed, on hold, and in other stages. It is super helpful for us to have that and track the order every step of the way.
“We have a Shopify store but do not use Shopify to track inventory. In terms of tracking inventory, we use ShipBob for everything — to be able to track each bottle of perfume, what we have left, and what we’ve shipped, while getting a lot more information on each order.”

The analytics are super helpful. We download Excel files from the ShipBob dashboard all the time and use them to analyze everything from cancelations, to examining order weights, to checking on whether ShipBob is shipping orders on time. Even the way their warehouse receiving orders (WROs) work for sending inventory is very straightforward.
ShipBob saves us a lot of time by saving us a lot of headaches. Whenever an issue comes up, the resolution is quick, and we appreciate how they make things right.
Having Evan, our dedicated Account Manager is such an amazing help to us. He’s been so great and is always there for us. It’s such a pleasure working with him and having a direct contact on the team.
What’s next for Dossier?
Over the last BFCM weekend, we shipped more products than we did our entire first month of our business. Our production is ramping fast, and we will double to triple our sales in 2021.
To reflect on how we grew from nothing to where we are now is humbling and something we’re very proud of.
This year we will release dozens of new vegan, cruelty-free perfumes, doubling our scent collection.
We will continue making perfumes for the 99% — not just the top 1% like most perfume companies — enabling people to build a collection of scents they can wear when and how they want without worrying about price.
